It might be the audio equivalent of upscaling a DVD rather than popping in the Blu-Ray, but if you're listening through a normal pair of headphones or a less than mid-range set of speakers, it works wonders for the experience. The clarity of both music and vocals are massively improved when engaging its trickery, at the expense of virtually no discernible additional noise or artifacting. Firing up a bunch of 64 and 128kbps MP3 files from the depths of my ill-advised CD ripping session back in 2001, the effect of the Crystalizer in particular is impressive. To do so they utilise high-end processing and hardware, including external DACs delivering 127dB signal-to-noise ratio, sockets for swappable Op-Amps, a high-end 80mW into 600 ohm headphone amplifier and 192kHz pass-through. Their new range - the Sound Blaster Z series - are cards that promise вЂњthe very best listening experience for movies, games and musicвЂќ according to the promotional blurb.

TheyвЂ™re still here and they still hold value for even a modest desk-based PC setup however, and Creative are flying their pro audio flag with as much gusto as they can manage. Whilst most of us older-generation PC users used to look forward to the new bells and whistles that came along with a sound card refresh every year or so, IвЂ™d be hard pushed to identify anybody else thatвЂ™s given a discreet audio card a second thought for the best part of a decade. Other board features are a Cirrus Logic CS4398-CZZ digital-to-audio converter (DAC), a JRC 2114 op-amp for headphone, a JRC 4556A op-amp for line-out speakers, and a Cirrus Logic 8416CN receiver for the optical in and out.In the world of on-board audio processing for motherboards, graphics cards and even headsets, itвЂ™s no small wonder that companies like Creative are still attempting to cater to a consumer-grade market. The audio processor is responsible for offloading from the CPU the now negligible task of interpreting audio data. The sound card shares the same Creative CA0113-4AG audio processor as the flagship Sound Blaster ZxR and the preceding Sound Blaster Recon3D lineup. These LED lights cannot be turned off while the computer is on. We can see the two red LEDs that illuminate the SoundCore3D badge so that it shines through the EMI shields plastic window. The rear panel has five 3.5mm jacks for microphone, amplified headphone, front speaker, rear speaker, and subwoofer/center speaker in addition to optical out and optical in.ДЄn EMI shield covers the length of the sound card and serves to block electrical interference from other computer components. It fits right in any PCI Express x1 (PCIe x1) compatible slot on the motherboard which also powers the card. The sound card measures 4.9 inches long and occupies a single slot. It also acts as a microphone in addition to independent volume control and extending and splitting the headphone and microphone lines to a pair of 3.5mm jacks and a pair of 1/4 inch jacks. In place of the beam-forming microphone found with the Z is the Audio Control Module for the Sound Blaster Zx.
